Miniature Love: Let Them Eat Cake!

I am ashamed to say I STILL have not set up my stuff so that I can make some miniature cakes, boo! So I'm posting some older pics to motivate myself AND to share one of my favorite hobbies with my newer readers!

I've been making miniature food since April 2009 and I love it! I love to make cakes but I make other food too every now and then. These are all made by me out of polymer clay. They're 1:12 scale, so each whole cake is around 3/4th an inch in diameter...which is like a penny. Enjoy!

Miniature Love: Love Is In The Air

I love every single thing about this picture! Mini heart-shaped cookies! *swoon*

I wanted to wait and post this picture on Valentine's Day but I couldn't! It's just too cute not to share & I haven't posted about miniature food in a while! I miss making minis so much. My studio is still not quite set up so I'm having to wait *pout* But I logged on to Flickr today and saw this beautiful photo in my contact's list. This lovely miniature heart cookie scene was done by Kim Saulter of It's A Miniature Life. She is my #1 most favorite miniature food artisan....and to have her tell me she liked my work was the ultimate compliment. SHe is one of the main reasons I wanted to start working with polymer clay. She is sooooooo incredibly talented and her tiny 1/12th scale creations and imagery make you want to reach through the screen and dive into Kim's magical little world :D Her miniature food looks so real...the details are so minute that you will be amazed! Please please please do yourself a real favor and visit Kim's blog and flickr. You will be taken to a fairytale land :D

Miniature Love: Funfetti Cake!

Funfetti Cake
Funfetti Cake Funfetti cake - Sprinkles are so fun :)
A few days back Mel asked me if I could make a funfetti cake. I'd never tried before but I'm SO glad she asked because it was TOO much fun making this mini cake. I LOVE funfetti cake and I have no clue why I didn't think of this! Mel, you are awesome :) I am definitely going to do a lot more of these and in different sizes. The sprinkles on top of this cake are ITSY BITSY! (each one is about the size of a grain of salt O_O) I kept dropping them on my glass cutting board and it took me a minute or two to find them because my eyes had to change focus to spot them, LOL. That's how insanely small they are.

If you're wondering what the sugary, sprinkle-laden object in the  back is, it's a Wacky Apple made by Happy Apples. It's basically an apple dipped in yummy caramel sauce and then rolled in colorful sprinkles. The boy bought two a while ago on one of his sweet tooth runs and I never got around to eating mine. I tasted his and while it's good, it's SUPER sweet. One bite was enough for me ;)

Anyway, I hope you guys like this one! If you want to see more pics of this uber kawaii cake, check out my Flickr!

p.s. It's available in the shop now too ♥

Shop Update: Miniature Lemon Cake

Lemon Cake A Slice of Lemon Cake
Lemon Icing
Several mini cakes will start trickling into my Etsy shop over the next few days, finally! I'm starting off with basic flavors and I will add more fancy dancy ones soonish! This cake is one of my favorites because of the icing. It has a soft yellow tint and I love the swirls ;)

Oh, P.S.

Typhoid Ashley, the winner of my last giveaway, posted a slideshow of her goodies from me!! PLEASE check it out because it's just so freaking cute to see it in that format.  You can view it HERE.

If you were curious about what the mystery gift was, it was different for every person who entered! You know how I asked everyone to tell me what their favorite dessert is?? Well hers was chocolate covered strawberries so I made her miniature chocolate covered strawberries and a bowl of chocolate sauce for dipping!

You would have gotten your favorite dessert in miniature form and that would have been pretty cool, right? right! *wink*

Miniature Love: Chocolate Cake, mmmm.

 Chocolate cake
 Would you like a slice??

I finally realized how to get my icing like I wanted it, YAY! My icing inspiration is the amazingly talented Kim Saulter of It's A Miniature Life. I look at the cakes on her flickr A LOT because they are just so perfect! I hope Kim would be proud of this super swirly icing! Look for my miniature cakes to hit the shop SOON! (Hopefully by this weekend at the latest!) I will probably take custom orders on cakes so if you have a certain flavor request, don't be scared to ask!

Miniature Love: Lemon Cane Success!

This is how it all begins. (flat and over an inch in diameter)

Then you start pinching the center and pulling to reduce it...
Voila! (and yes I skipped hella steps, lol. You just keep pinching and pulling and eventually roll it into this...a CANE! whoop!
Then you can bake and slice (or slice and bake depending on what you're making) your cane and make yummy things like such.
candied lemon tart-a-lisciousness!

The cane is not perfect by ANY means but I am so proud of it anyway! I have tried to make canes in the past and they came out look a hot ass mess, LOL. I think using the Premo clay, which holds it's firmness better than SculpeyIII really helped. Stay tuned because I know I'm going to go cane crazy! They're such a challenge to make but it's so fun when you actually get it close to right ;)

p.s. Did you notice my Sesame Street mat? I got it from Target for $1. I love it and should have bought more! :) I need to post a full picture of it because cookie monster and abby cadabby are on there too! also, I combing melly vs the cupcakes blog w/ this blog again. They just couldn't stand being apart any longer, so NOW you can learn more about my life and my business all in the same place. SCORE for you, my dear readers ;)

Miniature Love: Grapes, a new method.

I figured out how to make them look more translucent and realistic. I LOVE these! Besides making cakes, I think grapes are my favorite thing to make. It's so tedious but once you get into a rhythm, it's kind of relaxing. For me, making any kind of mini is relaxing though. It's a great way to escape into a tiny fantasy world :)

Miniature Love: Peach Tart

The picture doesn't show it as well as in real life but it's a little too glossy for my taste. It still came out really nice though. Next time I will use a matte finish instead and see how I like it. I wanted the peaches to have a nice sheen, but the varnish I used gave it too much a "bling bling" shine (ugh I hate to use that term but it fits here, lol.)

Miniature Love: I get carried away sometimes.

more strawberries and more shortcake. oh and a tart too! :)

Miniature Love: My strawberries rock.

Strawberry Shortcake

I went to Michael's yesterday and got some Premo clay and beveled clay cutters. Usually I use SculpeyIII clay but I've been wanting to try something different. I am in love with their translucent clay! I used it to make the strawberries and they are so much better than my first attempt...I also think Premo will be better for making canes so maybe I'll have strawberry slices soon!

I need to go to bed NOW. Staying up late making minis is becoming a bad habit! Can't I just quit my day job and make minis all day?? ;)

Miniature Love: Let them eat cake!

1. Lemon cake w/ powdered sugar frosting & fruit on top...peaches and maraschino cherries.
2. Chocolate Cherry cake w/ vanilla buttercream icing, shaved chocolate, & maraschino cherries on top of dollops of whipped cream.

I haven't made any cakes in a long time so it was fun to make these summery cakes. I missed making desserts! I like making fruits and veggies but my heart belongs to the cake! I need to make cupcakes and brownies next. *stomach growls* :)

Miniature Love: Finally, grapes!

Making grapes is not easy and it took me uber attempts to get them looking decent. What do you think?? I think they're great but my crummy camera doesn't do them justice. I am buying a better camera soon! argh!

p.s. I was reading my favorite illustrator's blog and some stupid company in Korea took her stuff! They might have changed colors or added text, but they are obviously her drawings and that blows. Read about it here.

Miniature Love: Chocolate Chip Orgasms Cookies

This is my first set of chocolate chip cookies. The one with the yellow arrow is the best one in my opinion. I textured that one more than the others...I got sleepy while making these so they aren't as good as they could be. I used a different technique with the pastels this time...I mixed grated pastel with a little water and painted the color on. Usually I just scrape some off of the pastel and brush the powder on. I like the results. The chocolate chunks look really huge in this picture but I think it's the angle because they aren't this big in reality....

Now I need to learn how to make milk to go with it :)

Are you tired of minis yet?

Well too bad because I have moooooore! I don't know what's gotten into me but I am spending all my free time being creative. This is what I've wanted to do for years and now I'm actually doing it. go figure!

I've got more apples, pears, and some strawberries...enjoy!

A proper shot of my new peaches.

I made more peaches today. I bought some new clay and tools today so I figured I would put them to good use. I made these much more richer and I love the results. I need to take a picture in sunlight so you can get the true color. It's amazingly soft and blush looking...just like a real peach!

Peaches: A Comparison

My mini peaches
